The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks left nothing to chance in their pursuit of the Hugh McLean Trophy.

Saugeen Shores captured the OEHL/OHA “A” Championship on April 4th with a 9-6 Game 4 win over the Tillsonburg Thunder.

Trevor Donaldson, Mike Fiegehen and Miles MacLean each scored a pair for Saugeen Shores, while Justin Marlowe, Curtis Johnston and Hudson Wiles had a goal each.

It was a remarkable run for the 18-year old Wiles, who joined Saugeen Shores as an Affiliate Player upon the conclusion of the season for the GOHL’s Listowel Cyclones.

Wiles notched 7 goals and added 8 assists for 15 points in 5 games with his hometown Winterhawks.

Saugeen Shores jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first period, but Tillsonburg was not about to fold up shop with their season on the line.

The Thunder rallied for three second period goals, while Saugeen Shores managed one goal to send the game to the third period with a precarious two-goal lead.

Saugeen Shores goaltender Eric Peicheff made sure the Thunder could get no closer, making several excellent saves as Tillsonburg pushed with time running out.

Saugeen Shores put it away with two goals 40-seconds apart late in the 3rd period for the win.

Tye Johnson, Cory Mallet, Kane Johnson, Hunter Monkhouse, Symon Reddin and Andrew Oosterveld scored for Tillsonburg, who were full marks for battling until the final buzzer sounded.

The win capped off an 8-0 run for Saugeen Shores through the OEHL “A” playoffs, sweeping aside the Shelburne Muskies before doing the same to Tillsonburg in the final.

All told, Saugeen Shores outscored their opponents 72-25 in eight games.

Saugeen Shores joins the Georgian Bay Applekings (2023-24) and Durham Thundercats (2024-25) as OEHL “A” champions.
