About The Trophy

The Paxton Trophy is rich with history, dating back 90 years.

First awarded in 1935, the trophy was originally awarded to the Ontario Hockey Association’s Intermediate B champions.

Aside from a halt in play during World War II, the Paxton Cup was awarded annually to the OHA Intermediate B and later, Senior A champions over the next 57 years, until 1992.

The Paxton Trophy appears to have been resurrected for one season in 2003-04 by the Eastern Ontario Senior Hockey League before being retired.

The Ontario Elite Hockey League is proud to re-energize this beautiful trophy, which will now be awarded to the champions of the AA Playoffs.

About J.F. Paxton

John Franklin Paxton was born in Port Perry, Ont. in 1857.

He succeeded his father as sheriff of Ontario County (now Durham Region) in 1887, and held the position until retiring in 1932.

J.F. Paxton became vice-president of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1915, and became president of the OHA from 1917 until 1918, and then treasurer of the OHA until his death in 1936.

Paxton defended the principles of amateur sport, fighting to preserve the amateur status of the OHA.

In 1935, the OHA established the trophy in his name that has now become the OEHL championship trophy.
